Clair Flats" and "Solomon" , then three more in the incomplete Castle Nowhere , I scoured the internet for the remaining four of this collection. Each story is set in the Great Lakes region, in rough settlements, for the most part, with setting determining plot.
At one point I wondered if the story might be a precursor of sorts to A Study in Scarlet part of which describes an early Mormon settlement. There is no mystery, murder or violence; yet menace is implied during the covert whisperings of the leaders over those who want to leave. Henry -type tale another author Woolson came before.

Seeking a quick read to lighten up some dreary winter days, I chose this book for my literary birthday project.
The "lake-country" in the title refers to the North American Great Lakes. Having spent my youth in relative proximity to Lake Superior, and being familiar with the unique culture of the region, I was excited to find this collection of stories. The beginning of the title story, Castle Nowhere , is very enticing. A mysterious, nameless character is camped with his dogs in the hinterland north of Lake Michigan. The descriptive prose is beautiful and seems very realistic. Just what I wanted!
See a Problem?
Oops -- sorry. The appearance of another strange character who seems to materialize out of the fog and disappear into thin air made it obvious that this story would be a fantasy or a fairy-tale. However, by then I was hooked; my expectations had shifted and I ventured into the fog which shrouded northern Lake Michigan. Things are not always what they seem to be, especially in a fantasy world, and the plot twists and surprise revelations kept me interested.

The stereotypical hidden lodging, beautiful maiden, black housemaid, unrequited love, physical hardships, illness, death, crime, happily-ever-after ending, and moral dilemmas place this work firmly in the genre. The adventure was lots of fun!
As the author's first published book, this collection seems to hold great promise. However, a word of caution to modern readers is in order. Towards the end of the story, an attempt is made to inject some humour - based, unfortunately, on racism and religious prejudice. While such "humour" may have been acceptable at the time of publication , it may offend modern sensibilities as it has mine. This book, as originally published, is a collection of nine short stories the title story being the longest. The book which I downloaded from Project Gutenberg contains only three stories from the original collection, one additional story, and one poem.
The original nine-story collection can be downloaded at The Internet Archive. For the moment, this review is based only on the title story and will be edited after I have read the original nine-story collection.
